Thesis (M.A.)--The College of St. Scholastica, 2012.
This paper examines the impacts of the Comprehensive Recycling Program through a multi-layered study of Stowe and Hermantown Elementary Schools' current recycling program. By examining the current recycling programs, this study describes the process by which the recycling program transforms a local Elementary School lunch program into an environmentally conscious and efficient recycling program. Two major research strategies were used in this study: a quantitative analysis of local data and a case study. Data has been collected from interviews, books, reputable websites, and published reports. This project challenges the argument that recycling programs are inconsequential. Some view recycling programs as unnecessary but based on the effects of polystyrene and the savings benefit from implementing a recycling program, it is clear there are substantial benefits to be derived. Stowe Elementary school is a local pioneer in the movement of recycling. Promoting change in recycling programs on a local level will help schools save money, teach the importance of recycling outside of school, reduce their environmental footprint and reduce the exposure to polystyrene among elementary school children.
