For centuries, music has been taught through aural model, whether folk music passed down through generations or in structured music education curricula. In instrumental music education, a strong division of thinking exists as to whether an aural model is beneficial or leads to dependent learners.

In this study, seventh and eighth grade intermediate clarinet students were tested to see if an auditory model proved beneficial in the process of learning an advanced level etude. Students were tested using an assigned All Region technical etude that was above their level of reading. Half of the students were given a CD with tracks at 3 slower practice tempos and 1 track at tempo with a practice binder, while the others were given just the practice binder. Subjects were tested twice, at two-week intervals, to determine if the CD was having any effect on their ability to learn the etude.

I found that the students with a CD recording improved significantly compared to those without a CD. When comparing students based on enrollment in private lessons, those not in private lessons tested far behind students with lessons in week two, regardless of CD. However, by week four, students in the group with a CD tested at the same level as those who had been taking prolonged private lessons that did not receive a CD. Finally, the data were analyzed based on socio-economic status of the campus the students attended. CD Students at the Title One campuses in this study achieved results comparable to their affluent peers, while the students without a CD at the Title One campuses had very little success. The results of this study have positive implications for the use of an aural for teachers and students alike in varying music education environments.
