Regular physical Activity (PA) can help to reduce the incidence of many noncommunicable diseases. Getting regular PA at a young age may help to increase PA levels into adulthood and help prevent many diseases. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of an outdoor physical activity program on middle school adolescent's PA autonomy, competency, and relatedness. METHODS: A 20-week outdoor PA program based on the Self-Determination and Social Cognitive theories was implemented at a rural middle school in Oregon. RESULTS: Quantitative results show no statistical changes between pre-and post-testing. Qualitative results reported changes in participant PA autonomy, competency, and relatedness. CONCLUSIONS: An outdoor PA program may be effective in increasing PA autonomy, competency and relatedness in middle school adolescents, however further research should be conducted to better elucidate this topic.
