A significant increase in childhood obesity over the past thirty years has plagued the health of today's youth. This health crisis has placed a significant physical, mental, and financial burden on the United States that must be addressed. Because American youth spend most of their time at school, schools are an ideal place to implement obesity prevention programs. Unfortunately, many school administrators have decided to decrease or remove physical activity time during the school day because of pressures for students to perform well on standardized tests. Because of this, many students are not meeting the national recommendations for physical education and physical activity each day. The purpose of this quantitative research was to examine whether a school's involvement in the Let's Move Active Kansas Schools (LMAKS) initiative would have a significant impact on body mass index (BMI) scores of elementary students in Kansas as measured by the FITENSSGRAM. Participants for this study included 320 students from Kansas elementary schools who were in the fifth grade during the 2014-2015 school year and whose schools participated in the Kansas Fitness Information Tracking (K-FIT) project during 2013-14 and 2014-15. Results indicated a significant increase in body mass index (BMI) scores within both LMAKS and non-LMAKS groups over a two-year period, F(1, 318) = 119.322, p < .001. Involvement in the LMAKS program did not have a statistically significant impact on BMI, F(1, 318) = .192, p = .661. Therefore, regardless of a student's involvement in LMAKS, BMI scores increased over a two-year period. Further research is recommended to more closely examine the types of LMAKS programs implemented and the impact these programs may have on today's youth. Future research is needed to identify whether CSPAP programs such as LMAKS are providing students with increased physical activity opportunities and to determine whether students are receiving health benefits, such as sustained or improved BMI, as a result of taking part in these initiatives.
