Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2015.
My dissertation seeks to analyze the relationship between language and power in the Roman historian Tacitus' (ca. 56--120 AD) Annals, which treats the first Roman imperial dynasty, the Julio-Claudians (14--68 AD). The specific claim that I am demonstrating in my dissertation is that for Tacitus form and content, language and politics are intimately, inseparably bound. Thus I will argue that the characteristics of Tacitus' language---is prose style and narrative strategies---eflect and reinforce the social and political characteristics of each regime. My primary explanation for this is that Tacitus wishes to create a text so impressively vivid that we become implicated in the narrative itself, consequently allowing us to grasp more fully the feelings which the historian wishes to communicate and which are, for him, just as important a part of the story to relay as 'the facts' or the information.
