The present doctoral dissertation examines dialectal discourse from the aspect of conversation analysis and as such brings innovative findings to the area of dialectal studies as well as opens up new horizons for scientific studies of the Istrian dialect and the Rakitovec local dialect. Based on the theoretical findings on spoken language, discourse and conversation analysis thus far, the author builds her analysis using field-gathered and transcribed texts divided into the following text genre categories: narrative text genres (narratives, anecdotes, recounts, exempla), observation/comments, opinions, gossips and chats. Throughout the analysis, the selected text genre typology is confirmed and proves to be characteristic of dialectal discourse (with a possibility of adding explanation as a text genre). However, it is necessary to point out that the selected texts fit into a single text genre, while indeterminated i.e. mixed text genres are also a part of casual conversation.

The present doctoral dissertation examines dialectal discourse from the aspect of conversation analysis and as such brings innovative findings to the area of dialectal studies as well as opens up new horizons for scientific studies of the Istrian dialect and the Rakitovec local dialect. The methodological basis of the analysis is founded on quantitative corpus approach, for which the Nardis-Ra corpus has been formed. Transcriptions of the texts are predominantly orthographic as the analysis of such texts is dependent on the corpus and digital transcription, both of which call for simplifications. It has been confirmed that the corpus of spoken Slovene GOS, a corpus that initially lead us to the use of orthographic transcription, currently lacks suitable marking for the transcription of dialectal texts, as it does not consider accent and vowel reduction to schwa. In spite of that, the transcription used in this dissertation, still remains closer to the orthographic transcription, due to the corpus needs that required simplifications and lead to a combination of orthographic and phonetic transcription. The transcription is still similar to GOS, specifically in its aspiration for parallel formation of similar research and comparable dialectal conversations corpora.

Quantitative corpus approach used in the present thesis is the starting point of qualitative linguistic treatment of the selected pragmatic characteristics of the analysed discourse (statements, turn-taking and discourse markers) in reliance to the discussed text genres. The author carefully emphasises the outline of discourse markers, their genres, turns and distribution in different text genres.

The analysis confirms the hypothesis on the usage of various text genres in dialectal discourse, in which the coherence is based on the principles of spoken language and yet the formation of coherence dependant on text genres is mainly reflected in the use of discourse markers, statement forms and turn-taking.
