Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, 1998.
The present research explores the interaction of subordinated gender and privileged racial statuses of white women firefighters as tokens in a white, male-dominated workplace, and contrasts their experiences with those of African American women firefighters. In-depth telephone interviews with 24 white women firefighters nationwide focused on social interactions within three major areas: differential treatment, gender, and race. In contrast to African American women who experienced sexism with racial discrimination, white women experienced sexism with a "paternalistic overprotection" pattern that resulted in some measure of racial privilege, but also continued to stereotype and marginalize them.
