Society perceives higher education as a gateway to economic independence and financial prosperity. Individuals on the autism spectrum may find that pursuing higher education could improve their overall quality of life. This research study explored how parents successfully developed social and independent living skills in their young adult children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, the researcher sought an understanding of how nonacademic skills development knowledge was selected, applied and reinforced to support postsecondary education (PSE) preparedness, retention and success. A review of the literature on postsecondary learners diagnosed with ASD revealed a lack of understanding on the part of postsecondary institutions concerning the insufficient development of nonacademic skills and the impact on learner retention and success. The use of a basic qualitative methodology enabled the researcher to gain an understanding and insights into human phenomena and cultural, social, and contextual characteristics of the research environment. Of particular interest were parents of young adults with college aspirations, transitioning to postsecondary education (PSE) or attending postsecondary institutions. A semi-structured interview process was utilized to collect narrative data allowing the researcher to focus on understanding phenomena in a natural setting in terms of constructed meanings given to experiences. Participants' responses were transcribed and analyzed using a constant comparative method of data analysis. The participants were successful at preparing their young adults for PSE by focusing on essential social and independent living skills that overlapped with executive functioning skills. However, more research is needed to assist professionals working with autism community. Understanding executive functioning deficits is daunting and will require incorporating both theoretical practices and research findings to develop unique intervention methods.
