According to the trans-diagnostic cognitive behavioral model of eating pathology by Fairburn, Cooper, and Shafran (2003), clinical perfectionism is one additional maintaining process interacting with core eating psychopathology. This study examined the association between various advocated measures of clinical perfectionism and eating psychopathology among 94 student-athletes and 95 college students with a mean age of 20.7 years by means of an online survey.

Non-athletes scored significantly higher than student-athletes on the EDE-Q composite score, U = 2522.50, z = - 5.00, p < .001, r = .37; as did females compared to males, U = 2290.00, z = - 4.75, p < .001, r = .35. Results of standard multiple regression analysis revealed that athletic status (beta = .30, t = 4.50, p < .001), gender (beta = -.27, t = -4.05, p < .001), and self-critical perfectionism (beta = .23, t = 3.49, p = .001) were significant predictors of eating psychopathology. Moderation analyses were conducted to examine the effect of gender or athletic status on the link between self-critical perfectionism and eating psychopathology. The interactional effects of gender and self-critical perfectionism (b = -.009, se = .012, p = .45), and athletic status and self-critical perfectionism (b = -.003, se = .012, p = .80) were not significant. The findings reinforce the detrimental role of self-critical perfectionism on eating psychopathology for student-athletes and non-athletic students. Both populations might benefit from the same treatment and prevention strategies, which should consider the association between perfectionism and eating pathology.
