Importance and Objectives: There is a significant shortage of mental health providers relative to the demand for mental health services in the United States (U.S.). This research thesis reviews the current status and future trends of the available mental health workforce and of the psychiatric needs of the population. It also proposes that technology-enabled asynchronous approaches, such as telephone, email, text and video, could be used to deliver indirect psychiatric consultations. These indirect consultations could partly combat the growing shortage of mental health providers and improve access of psychiatric care to the proliferating number of patients suffering from psychiatric disorders in the United States.
