This dissertation investigates how Iberian wildlife was conceived, framed, enrolled, governed and debated as the object of modern cultural, socio-environmental, and techno-scientific practices in Spain during Francoism and the transition to democracy. This is a dissertation about the emergence, reemergence and consolidation of modern cultures of nature and socio-environmental assemblages that became dominant during a period in which the Spanish-state territory was subjected to processes of fast and intense modernization under the oligarchical control of the Francoist state and the elite social and professional groups most intimately attached to it. It argues how dominant cultures of nature in twentieth-century Spain have developed around outdoors leisure activities for the oligarchy and the middle classes (such as sports hunting and excursionism), around state-sponsored projects to extend and intensify the extraction-production of food, energy and raw materials, and, finally, around the production and consumption of popular science and educational television.

This dissertation investigates how Iberian wildlife was conceived, framed, enrolled, governed and debated as the object of modern cultural, socio-environmental, and techno-scientific practices in Spain during Francoism and the transition to democracy. This dissertation also studies how these dominant cultures of nature, human-nonhuman assemblages, and biopolitical arrangements were undermined by their own contradictions, by frictions among themselves, and by the ethical and political challenges posed by emergent or alternative ways of practicing, conceiving and experiencing human-wildlife relations. In this dissertation I tell, in sum, a multifaceted story with two main intertwined storylines: first, the story of the different roles that "wild" lifeforms were assigned in the evolving modernizing project of the Francoist state, and, second, the story of how these roles ---and the model of human-wildlife relations that emerged from them--- were variously enacted, debated, reformulated or contested in books, television programs and films from the Francoist and Post-Francoist period. To do that I focus on three case studies. These case studies represent, on one hand, different periods in the evolving nationalist modernizing project of the Francoist State. On the other hand, they are representative of different cultures of nature that were either dominant, emerging, reemerging, or marginalized in twentieth-century Spain.
