Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 2017.
This is a history of architectural adaptation and innovation in Kumasi, Ghana, beginning at the apex of the Asante Empire in the early nineteenth century and continuing through the end of the colonial era (1824-1957). Positing Kumasi's architectural "originary modernity," the thesis examines the continuities in Kumasi's role as incubator of architectural innovation and as symbol of Asante selfhood against a long history of global exchange and a shorter period of colonial rule. The project focuses on specific architectural expressions in the city of Kumasi from 1824 to the late 1950s, focusing on key buildings in the developing urban fabric as emblems of particular modes of architectural change.
