This dissertation is a constructive interrogation of masculine values in the following English texts: Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883); Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891); Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Speckled Band" (1892); Erskine Childers' The Riddle of the Sands (1903); and Joseph Conrad's Victory (1915). In addition, this dissertation investigates the German-language film adaptations of the above works in terms of the search for a new masculine paradigm in the following German-language Cold War era films produced in West Germany (Bundes Republik Deutschland) in a twenty-year span between 1966 and 1986: Paul May's Sherlock Holmes---Das gefleckte Band (1967 adaptation of Doyle's "Speckled Band"); Wolfgang Liebeneiner's Schatzinsel (1966 adaptation of Stevenson's Treasure Island); Massimo Dallamano's Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray (1969 adaptation of Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray); Vadim Glowna's Des Teufels Paradies (1986 adaptation of Conrad's Victory); and finally, Rainer Boldt's Das Ratsel der Sandbank (1985 adaptation of Childers' The Riddle of the Sands).

520 $a Cold War German males were in search of a masculine paradigm that rejected the hegemonic value system of its National Socialist past, but more importantly, one that also rejected the masculine values of both Soviet and American hegemonies. The Cold War German was in search of a new masculine paradigm just as the late-Victorian male was in search of a new masculine paradigm during the fin de siecle and beyond into the Edwardian and Georgian periods. The Victorian male (through the negotiation of the "Other" as Criminal/Enemy) anticipated not only the ethical challenges of the twentieth century, but the physical/martial challenges as well. Thus, the above-mentioned German-language films exemplify how and why the Cold War German male identified with the adaptive behaviorisms of the late-Victorian male, who anticipated the dark clouds of the twentieth century just as the Cold War German male anticipated the dark clouds of the Cold War and the nuclear age.
520 $a Thus, lessons were to be learned from history---from the models of late-Victorian masculinity. The Germans, like the Victorians before them, had to confront the unknowns of the atomic age head-on and without fear or hesitation. For the West German, the enemy threats from within and from without had to be confronted with a new form of masculinity: a masculinity not governed by East or West; a masculinity of moral balance through reason; a masculinity that sought alternatives to established moral authority; and finally, a masculinity that confronted the enemy through self-determination. These films signify how German masculinity was attempting to learn from the masculine challenges and mistakes of the long Victorian period and apply these lessons within the context of Cold War challenges.
