Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2016.
This dissertation aims to bring ethnomusicological discourse, theory, and practice into conversation with public health programs around HIV/AIDS. Building on the work of other medical ethnomusicologists, I show how ethnomusicological and ethnographic examination of HIV-themed music, advertisements for HIV campaigns, and other artistic endeavors around HIV could benefit future health education programming. While examining individual songs about HIV/AIDS, health and education programs that use music and the arts, and the biography of an HIV positive calypsonian, I examine the way multiple sets of discourses---about health, disease, sexuality, music, and musical genre---mutually affect one another. In doing so, I illuminate the multiple and unexpected effects that musical sound, music genre, and musical communities have on health discourses in the specific context of soca, calypso, and Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago.
