This study examines how student understanding of narrative transportation can be used to benefit student reading comprehension. Specifically, it considers the impact on the reading assessment of undergraduate college students in a communications program before and after students are taught transportation theory. MARSI Scale of Development and Validation was used to compare reading strategy levels among the experimental group and the control group. The Barrett Taxonomy was used to measure reading comprehension of both the experimental group and the control group. The Narrative Transportation Questionnaire was used to measure both groups' understanding of the lecture with film technique. ANOVA testing discovered a statistical significance between the experimental group and the control group. The L1, English as first language, and L2, English as second language, students within the control group scored statistically higher on the A Summers Tragedy Barrett Taxonomy comprehension test than that of the experimental group.

The results of this study suggest there is room for additional studies using the theory of narrative transportation as a tool to enhance reading comprehension. There are further indicators that recommend exploring more studies in order to identify new methods for instruction to apply in the classroom. This study also suggests knowing the theory of narrative transportation may benefit comprehension among L2 readers.
