This study attempts to analyze the futurist synthetic theater in a new perspective focusing on how speed contributed to the synthetic theater's form. In order to achieve this task, I start with examining the state of Italian theater before futurism to frame the futurists' demands in establishing a new kind of theater. The relationship between futurism and the synthetic is further illuminated through an analysis of the manifestos that the movement created. Characteristics seen in these manifestos, such as symbolism, dynamism, the illogical and alogical, and speed are examined within their relationship to the synthetic theater to provide a textual understanding of the synthetic plays. After analyzing some synthetic plays, I revisit the concept of speed, time, and space by presenting Paul Virilio's view on dromology. Virilio helps us to understand the synthetic theater beyond the textual analysis as he explains the function of velocity through a historical perspective.
