the history of European colonization of Native Americans and unhealthy persisting aspects of manhood and masculinity in current American culture. European patriarchy originated from monotheistic religions in which a male God bestowed onto men power and control over the feminine, physically and archetypally. This contrasts with Native American spirituality that centered around observations of the balance of life energies in nature. Attempting to achieve this balance affected every part of indigenous spirituality, culture, and society. Because their gender roles and sexual diversity were unacceptable to European colonizers, these aspects of traditional indigenous American culture were intentionally targeted and violently restructured, which contributed to the historic genocide and destruction of native culture and identity. This history contributes to the perpetuation of patriarchal ideals that continue to be a source of suffering for American men, women, and society.
