Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016.
Using a hermeneutic methodology, this thesis discusses the understanding and use of emojis in a counseling context. Teenagers, the major users of digital and electronic devices, spend a good deal of time texting, tweeting, viewing social media, and watching other similar platforms, communicating face-to-face less than earlier generations. Enhancing written text, emojis have taken the place of human expression in electronic communication, replacing vocal tones, gestures, and facial expressions. Emojis were embedded in the iPhone in 2011, and the "tears of joy" emoji was recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary as the word of the year in 2015. The research is scarce on the topic; however, growing evidence has shown that emojis can be useful in one-on-one and group therapy to establish rapport and to assess the mental status of clients.
