Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2017.
Uniform Feelings examines the emotional labor of policing and the emotional management strategies that structure police officers' participation in their work. Police psychology, implicit bias research and training, and police museum-memorials are contemporary efforts to try to manage intense emotions around policing. Using an interdisciplinary American Studies approach, the project examines organizational practices and policies in each of these areas, arguing that they often work to maintain an expectation of violent premature death. In addition, these emotion management strategies isolate officers from the perspectives of individuals and communities targeted by law enforcement. The dissertation argues that these emotion management strategies may temporarily ease anxieties, but ultimately reinforce the risk of violence on the job. They promote a psychic landscape of expectant death that functions to increase the use of violence against those marked as threats in dominant discourses of race, gender, sexuality, nation, and ability.
