Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2015.
This dissertation examines the structure and history of an Orthodox church in St. Petersburg, Russia, who has separated from the larger Moscow Patriarchate. Leaving the Russian Orthodox Church in the late 1990s, the parish has experienced numerous troubles, from police investigations of the community to the murder of its founding bishop. In response, the church has had to develop not only strategies of protection for its community, but to articulate its own message, separate from the mainstream church.

This dissertation outlines the history of the parish of Saint Margaret's, and its connection to a larger line of dissent beginning with the schism in the Russian Orthodox Church in the early 20th century. It examines why the schism occurred, and why it has persisted past the end of the Soviet Union. The dissertation then turns to examining the case of the parishioners themselves, seeking to illuminate both why they left the Moscow Patriarchate, and what continues to draw members to the parish. Through a monastic focus and an apolitical perspective towards Orthodox Christianity, the parish of Saint Margaret's asserts its own legitimacy as seekers of religious truth, while challenging the nationalist orientation of the Moscow Patriarchate. The church carefully places itself within the context of Russian life, engaging and critiquing modern society in a manner that allows engagement without contamination of their religious purity. This work explores how the church navigates between these conflicting desires to separate from the world, and the need to be a part of it.
