By analyzing these texts, certain aspects of Faulkner's works often reappear in Hurston's and Walker's texts. First, common themes exist, such as order and chaos and burdens of the past. Second, characters in Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Walker's The Color Purple resemble the characters in Faulkner's works. Third, the Southern family structure in each of the four texts depicts broken families seeking to mend themselves.

Chapter Two delves into how Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and Light in August set the standard for Southern Literature. Chapter Three examines Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God by describing the order and chaos theme, comparing Janie Mae Crawford to Faulkner's Lena Grove from Light in August, and inspecting the family structure. Chapter Four analyzes Walker's The Color Purple by exploring the burdens of the past theme, comparing Sophia and Faulkner's Dilsey from The Sound and the Fury, and surveying the family structure.
