Disciplinary environments affect students within them in specific ways. Using Lattuca and Stark's (2009) Academic Plan, and Holland's (1997) Theory of Vocational Personalities and Environments, this study has explored the experiences of first-year undergraduate music students in their first college-level musicianship course. Through one-on-one interviews with these students, I have explored the experiences of vocal and instrumental students. The study, guided by Holland's Theory of Vocational Personalities and Environments, also explored the Holland Environment Type of the course. By investigating these students' experiences while considering (a) their instrument, (b) their preparedness, and (c) their Holland Personality Profile, I have identified themes in their overall experience in the course: Nerves, Perceived Rank, and Skill vs. Knowledge. Comparing the groups by major instrument illuminated the differences of the pre-college exposure to musicianship and the students' experiences within the course environment. Identifying trends in the experiences of these students within that environment may help guide faculty and institutions to a more complete understanding of the needs of first-year music students.
