Recent research has highlighted the academic difficulties that students with autism face. Reading comprehension, math problem solving, working memory and language impairments are areas of weakness that impact the academic success in students with autism. Many of these educational difficulties are also commonly observed in children who suffer from auditory processing disorders. While it is common for children with autism to have comorbid conditions, there is limited research that investigates if auditory processing contributes to the language and learning deficits observed in students with autism. Neuroimaging studies have identified various auditory abnormalities in individuals with autism, however these studies have not further investigated whether or not these auditory abnormalities may be related to the associated educational deficits observed in students with autism. The goal of this study is to understand if auditory processing is associated with educational weaknesses students with autism.
