This study identified and analyzed the writings of Herbert Baxter Adams on historical methodology and pedagogy. It showed how his views shaped the formation of the pedagogical trends in the study and teaching of history in the secondary schools and universities of the United States. The Adams papers located in the Milton S. Eisenhower Memorial Library on the campus of Johns Hopkins University were utilized in this research.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The findings of this study revealed that Adams contributed greatly to the inquiry method of teaching history in the United States. He believed that history had a vital role to play in citizenship education through the implementation of the historical method involving the utilization of critical thinking skills on the part of the students.

The aim of education, according to Adams, was not indoctrination, it was discovery, and discovery was the product of inquiry. The findings of this research supported the thesis that arousing and stimulating students' intellectual curiosity into active and comprehensive investigation and developing skills in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating historical evidence was a primary aim of history education. Adams articulated that the open and inquiring mind, and vigorous and disciplined investigation were the characteristics of free men and a democratic society.
