Thesis (Educat.D.)--Temple University, 1987.
Maxine Greene argues that a new emphasis on the liberal arts, the fine arts, and the performing arts in education can help to empower minorities and provide a dynamic classroom environment where passivity and de-personalization give way to the critical thinking and creative expression which characterize excellence in teaching and learning. The study describes Greene's position on the arts in teacher education. It explores her ideas on the role of the arts in the curriculum for prospective teachers and in inservice training for classroom teachers as well as her contention that a strong undergraduate program in the liberal arts is an essential part of teacher education. Using selected books, articles, and lectures written or given by Greene from 1965 to 1985, the study looks at Greene's claims that students can find in the arts a sense of discipline and order which will enhance their lives. The study finds that Greene has remained consistent in her support for the arts as a means of bringing about political, economic, and social change. In recent years she has also linked her educational philosophy to the call for excellence. As an outgrowth of her existentialist philosophy she has promoted methods of teaching and learning that are primarily participatory in nature. In addition to her teaching, writing, and lecturing, Greene's contributions to teacher education include the arts program she helped establish at Lincoln Center.Subjects--Topical Terms:
