This thesis has a two-fold purpose: to examine the treatment of history in colleges from the colonial period through the nineteenth century, and to examine the views of historians and influential educators on the changing place of history in higher education.

Particular attention is paid to the following: (1) The impact on the history curriculum of competing educational philosophies. (2) The views of historians and influential educators on the relationship between history and popularity of the idea of progress, faith in science, and an organic world view. (3) The rise of a historical nationalism, and the response to this notion of historians and educators. (4) The efforts of historians to define an appropriate history curriculum.

The research involved use of both secondary and primary source material. Secondary sources included numerous college histories and other works on the history of higher education. Primary sources included catalogues and records from a representative sample of colleges; papers, correspondence, and writings of historians and educators; and published documents and records from various periods in the history of American higher education.

It was found in the research that history study in colleges, which had been linked traditionally to language study in the classical curriculum, suddenly emerged as a vibrant, independent discipline in the 1880s and 1890s. There was no single source or discernible pattern in the spread of history study. But historians and many educators saw history as intertwined with the leading intellectual currents of the day and with the rise of a historical nationalism. Historians were also convinced that the growth of history hinged on their ability to engender an acceptance of definition of history as science.
