Flesh-eating ghouls. The living dead. Rotters. Skels. Walkers. Zack. Zs. Whatever they're called, zombies are everywhere and they're here to stay. This undead creature has risen, spread, infected global audiences, and overrun classic monsters to become the most prevalent and popular monster in the 21 st century. George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) introduced a hybrid subgenre featuring this uniquely American and incredibly complex monster. This dissertation aims to uncover and analyze the social protest power of seminal modem zombie screen narratives through time in an effort to reveal the enlightened influence of the genre at its finest.

520 $a Night of the Living Dead (1968) initiated radical representations of women and family, of men and monsters, that continue to thrive and evolve throughout the remainder of his original Dead trilogy---and in other key works including 28 Days Later... (2002) and Deadgirl (2008)---and that elevate this subversive genre from "camp" to social protest art. In recent times, however, the modern zombie genre is being co-opted and commodified---and therefore is losing its protest thrust---as evidenced by works such as AMC's The Walking Dead (2010-present), World War Z (2013), and Warm Bodies (2013). Nonetheless, hope for the genre's progressive potential prevails in the BBC's innovative and extraordinary mini-series In the Flesh (2013-2015).
520 $a While a handful of prominent critics and scholars have argued for the political relevance and feminist tendencies of Romero's Dead series, no single, sustained analysis of the modem zombie genre's radical representations and protest potential is available to date. Critical essays by Robin Wood, Kyle Bishop, Kim Paffenroth, Stephen Harper, Natasha Patterson, and others recognize the significance of Romero's representations---of gender, family, and monsters---and illustrate how the brightest zombie texts radically expose or break stereotypes, binaries, and "ideals." However, no scholar carries this focus through a book-length investigation or into how most recent contributions to genre work to reinforce normativity and reinstate conservatism. This depth and breadth of discussion is necessary before we completely lose ourselves to mindless consumption of today's ubiquitous zombie media, the very genre that warned us about the grave consequences of viral capitalism.
