Thesis (D.P.T.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2016.
The purpose of this literature review was to determine if Kegel exercises were more effective than trigger point release for treating urinary incontinence in young adult females experiencing stress incontinence. PubMed, CINHAL, and ResearchGate were systematically searched in March 2016 and five articles were selected for further review. Three articles addressed the use of Kegel exercises to strengthen and increase activation of pelvic floor muscles (PFM) via neuromuscular reeducation to reduce incontinent voiding. Two of the studies supported the use of trigger point release to normalize the tone of the musculature around and within the pelvic floor to allow these muscles to resume optimal function. These two studies agreed that trigger point release alone was beneficial to urinary incontinence associated with high impact activities, but higher success rates of decreased incontinence were achieved and sustained when paired with a strengthening regimen. Kegel exercises were found to be the most effective conservative intervention for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) when compared with trigger point release.
