Thesis (Ed.D.)--New England College, 2017.
This study explored how a social problem-solving curriculum with a strong emergent component affected problem-solving skills of 24 young children in an early childhood center in the northeast U.S. Quantitative and qualitative measures were used to gather perceptions, perspectives, and data. Implementation of a planned, formal curriculum evolved into new ways of thinking when teachers and students became aware of emergent moments for problem solving during the day. Children grew in their ability to generate relevant problem solutions. Boys doubled their ability to solve problems involving meeting new friends. Children experienced differing perspectives and viewpoints. Study results suggest that schools can effectively facilitate growth of problem-solving skills in students by increasing opportunities for solving problems together, taking advantage of emergent moments, using puppetry to support problem-solving, and creating a culture of respect and empowerment.
