This study examined how applying art therapy to an adventure based counseling affected participants' levels of hope and life effectiveness. Participants were young adults, ranging in age from 18 to 24 years, attending an Adventure Education class. The experimental group received the same adventure programming but debriefed using art therapy. Participants were given the Dispositional Hope Scale and Life Effectiveness Questionnaire pre and post. The results show that there was greater positive change in the experimental group than the control group, thus art therapy improved the adventure experience. The addition of art therapy also encouraged more participation and more meaningful discussions as seen in the qualitative data. It was discovered that aspects of adventure based counseling could be manipulated into art therapy. This creates a unique use of art therapy that focuses on problem solving, goal setting and teamwork in a distinctive fun setting.
