Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2017.
In this dissertation, engineered diffractive surfaces will be presented to solve common problems in nano-scale optics. Interscale Mixing Microscopy uses a diffractive structure to perform far-field label-free imaging of deep sub-wavelength objects. Image recovery is accomplished in a single measurement with either coherent or incoherent light, allowing simultaneous spectroscopy of the imaged object. The limits of light transmission through a structured interfaces are investigated. Structured dielectric interfaces are shown to exhibit near unity transmission of incident light. These structures preserve their strong anti-reflection properties even when a large fraction of the surface is covered in a highly-conductive (and thus reflective) material, paving the way for a new class of optoelectronic devices. Finally, a new modeling technique, Rigorous Diffractive Interface Theory, is presented, aimed at studying an emerging class of optically thin diffractive structures commonly known as metasurfaces. This technique provides the fundamental link between the optics of meta-surfaces and classical bulk optics. The proposed technique will be shown to model a wide variety of metasurfaces accurately and at a fraction of time of traditional algorithms.
