This study investigated coping skills, stigma, and attitudes toward professional help seeking in university students at small private Catholic University in Pennsylvania. It was hypothesized that those university students who indicated more favorable attitudes toward seeking psychological help would indicate less stigma. Additionally, it was hypothesized that those students who indicate less self-stigma or more favorable attitudes toward seeking psychological help would indicate different coping skills. Participants were recruited via email and undergraduate research pool. Two hundred and fifty four individuals participated in an online survey, which assessed coping skills (Brief Cope Scale), self-stigma (Self-Stigma of Seeking Help), and help seeking (Attitudes Toward Help Seeking Professional Psychological Help -- Short Form). The result of this study was analyzed using t-tests. Results indicated a negative correlation between help seeking and stigma. More favorable attitudes toward help seeking and less stigmatizing beliefs about mental illness correlated with different coping skills. Differences in coping skills were found between the following groups: male versus female, undergraduate versus graduate, and therapy versus no therapy. This study deepens our understanding of service use, stigma, and coping in university students.
