For over a century, the Guna, an indigenous people located on the Caribbean side of the Isthmus of Panama, have collectively resisted colonial forces, missionization, Hispanicization, and more recently, corporate intrusions. Engaging in tourism presents a complex and dynamic set of evolving challenges for the Guna. The purpose of this project is to explore the role that tourism might play in the continued preservation of Guna autonomy, identity, and control of resources within the comarca of Guna Yala. The implementation of a tourism strategy where everyday activities are not centered on the concerns or desires of tourists differentiates, and distinguishes the Guna's own tourism efforts, while ultimately underscoring their agentivity. As a result of their working consensus, tourism then emerges as another form of resistance and resilience to globalizing forces, while reinforcing identity, and addressing issues of equity in indigenous tourism practices.
