Thesis (M.A.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 1991.
In this thesis, three models are developed and used to fit and graduate age pattern of first marriage for China. The three models are piece-wise Pareto distribution, generalized logistic curve and generalized Gompertz function. It is found that these are satisfactory models for Chinese nuptiality. In particular, the first two are promising. The data for this study come from China 1% Population Sampling Survey conducted in 1987.

In the course of the study, moreover, marriage trend, gender and rural-urban differentials are analyzed systematically. The analysis reveals that Chinese nuptiality has changed dramatically and early marriage was dropped sharply. The mean age at first marriage has increased and the variance decreased. It is also seen that gender differentials in age pattern of first marriage in both rural and urban China have narrowed down with the changes in marriage situation. On the other hand, rural-urban differences have enlarged for both males and females. The implications of these changes are drawn. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
