520 $a A model for selecting crop enterprise combinations which minimize the risk of defaulting on fixed cash commitments was developed. The model draws on a review of literature and is based upon the well known notion that high return is associated with high risk and non-systematic risk can be diversified away. The practical and computationally simple model requires the calculation of risk and return ratios from means, variance and covariance of individual crop enterprises.
520 $a Due to a lack of data, extensive empirical testing of the model was not possible, however two case farms, from two different locations were developed. These cases were based upon historic crop yield data obtained from the state farms and from answers to questionnaires provided by family farm members during interviews. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
