Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan, 1993.
This dissertation investigates the distribution of educational opportunities in Taiwan's female population within the cohorts born between 1934 and 1957. It was designed to answer three questions: (1) How does the family of origin affect its children's educational attainment? (2) At which schooling levels are the effects of familial origins more significant? (3) Have social differentials in education decreased along with societal development and educational expansion?Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study uses three sets of island-wide probability survey data. The analyses focus on the effects of father's education, occupation, ethnicity, and sibship size on women's education. The linear regression model is used to examine these familial effects on the total years of education. Then the logistic regression model is used to examine the effects of familial origins at each major educational transition and the changes in these effects across historical time.

The results indicate that an individual's social origins affect school attendance at all educational levels, but with different magnitudes at different points in the schooling process. The effects of social origins are generally stronger at primary and junior secondary levels than at the transitions to senior secondary school and college. This supports the hypothesis of self-selection process. As more children from disadvantaged families leave the schooling process, those remaining in school are better able to compete effectively with those from more advantaged backgrounds.

This study also reveals that the strong effects of father's education and occupation on a daughter's education have not declined in recent decades. It suggests that educational stratification in Taiwan has not been suppressed due to the rapid educational expansion and the increase in individual family income. Instead, the stratification force of parental status on daughter's education is very strong and persistent over time.
