The purpose of this project is to analyze Paul's rhetorical interaction with the Corinthians over the issues of participating in the cultic meal (1 Cor 10:1-22) and eating of idol food (1 Cor 8:1-13, 10:23-11:1), and subsequently, to suggest potential implications for a cross-cultural hermeneutic. The thesis of this research that is propounded, on the basis of contextual and rhetorical investigations of the texts, is twofold. First, I contend that Paul is responding to two different issues out of two exigencies in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10. 1 Cor 10:1-22 is his midrashic rhetoric of exhorting the Corinthians to flee from idolatry. 1 Cor 8:1-13 and 10:23-11:1 are his rhetorics of knowledge and love that create a community dialogue for the "strong" and the "weak" to interact over the issue of eating idol food. Second, I contend that a cross-cultural, hermeneutical reading of these texts needs seriously to consider the issue, context, and composition of the audience, both ancient and modern. Despite these changing factors, a cross-cultural and rhetorical hermeneutic will allow the text to speak meaningfully and appropriately over space and time as the interpreter interacts with the texts and his intended audience.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The rhetorical-hermeneutical methodology, with which the thesis is sustained, accomplishes the following objectives. First, the rhetorical approach deals with both the content and the form of 1 Corinthians 8 and 10, that is, the theology and the rhetoric (argument of that theology) of Paul as he interacts with the audience. Secondly, this rhetorical-hermeneutical study generates a Chinese hermeneutic to be used for potential dialogues. Third, a rhetorical hermeneutic helps me to be intentional and conscious of the triangular interaction among the "situatedness" of Paul, the Corinthians, and myself. Such consciousness affirms for the interpreter the fusion of horizons and allows the differentiation and the transcending of those horizons. The thesis proves that biblical exegesis is hermeneutical (interpretive) insofar as it is rhetorical (communicative and interactive).
