This dissertation describes the ties and bonds that bind the business elite in Taiwan today, and thereby examines the social structure of the emerging capitalist class in a newly industrializing Chinese society. Historically, I trace how business relations are formed by the fledgling entrepreneurs. Structurally, I ask how the whole system of business relations is shaped.Subjects--Topical Terms:

To answer these questions, this study makes use of case study method and formal network analysis. Case studies reveal that Chinese entrepreneurs used a variety of social relation, guanxi, to raise capital, to recruit partners and managers, and to penetrate the government, and that they organized and expanded their business through a series of partnerships. The formal network analysis shows that most of the largest corporations are woven into a single, island-wide network of firms which I call "the web of partnerships." The elite entrepreneurs are also interconnected through marriage ties and other non-kin networks. Nevertheless, there is a quasi-ethnic divide between the Taiwanese and the Mainlander business elites; related as they are, the two camps are more closely interconnected within each camp than between them.

Three main conclusions are drawn from this research. First, partnership, similar to the one found in traditional Chinese merchant culture, is still the dominant form of business organization in capitalist Taiwan. Second, the development of an island-wide network of large corporations and close social bonds within the business elite indicates the making of a well organized capitalist class segment. Third, therefore, "culture," i.e., traditional ways of networking, and "political economy," i.e., dependent development of an export-oriented capitalist economy, codetermined the social structure of the Chinese business elite in Taiwan.
