Recent evidence indicates that rapid economic growth in rural mainland China has been accompanied by increased inequality in the distribution of income across rural households. The distribution of income from agriculture has remained quite egalitarian at the local level, hence, much of the observed increase in local inequality has been attributed to growth of the rural non-agricultural sector. In particular, wage income from rural industry has been identified as the greatest single source of rural household income inequality. This research examines variation in non-agricultural employment and income across farm households in China in order to assess the impact of rural non-agricultural development on farm household income.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The analysis uses data collected from approximately 250 farm households in one county in central Guangdong Province. An examination of farm household income indicates that the distribution of non-agricultural income is less egalitarian than the distribution of agricultural income. However, when income from non-agricultural self-employment is considered separately from non-agricultural wage income, we find that wage income is more egalitarian. Estimation of probabilities of employment in non-agricultural wage jobs and non-agricultural self-employment indicate that households whose members are self-employed differ systematically from households whose members are wage-earners. Wage employment is observed predominantly among households with young adult members, while self-employment is mostly observed among households which display characteristics indicating that they have knowledge, skills, or access to information or resources which may increase their income-earning potential in self-employment. Earnings from wage jobs are strongly correlated with individual attributes such as education and experience; the variation in earnings from self-employment is less easily explained.
520 $a Estimation results, coupled with the income distribution analysis, provide strong evidence that an increase in non-agricultural wage jobs will affect households differently from an increase in non-agricultural self-employment opportunities. Development which consists primarily of increased self-employment opportunities may be of little benefit to poor households lacking in entrepreneurial skills. On the other hand, development which provides wage-employment is more likely to benefit households regardless of their ability to engage in entrepreneurial activities.
