Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1992.
This research aims to investigate how women workers in Shekou Industrial Zone, People's Republic of China, perceive and contribute to the socio-cultural change that accompanies the implementation of the Special Economic Zone Policy as a result of Beijing's determination to re-enter the world capitalist economic system. The dualistic forces of ti and yong, or essence and application, form the basis of the Chinese model of modernization. Built upon this principle, an increasingly capitalized and commercialized cultural environment comes into being. With hopes of individual autonomy and aspiration for a better life, young women of rural background find themselves subject to traditional patriarchal gender relations, class exploitation and regional antagonism. As individuals women workers may accept or resist the middle class ideology of modernity and efficiency. But within the structural constraints and resources implicated by the reality of modernization, all are active agents of change as they pursue their everyday routine of work and leisure, thereby reproducing and modifying the social structure that enables and mediates their action.Subjects--Topical Terms:
