The learning of tone is difficult for adult learners of non-tone languages learning a tone language. This study investigated how Mandarin tones are perceived and produced by adult English speakers in the first months of their learning of Mandarin.

American university students taking Elementary Chinese were tested (at the beginning and the end of the first term) on their perception and production of Mandarin tones in isolated syllables, 2-syllable words, and short sentences. The production data were judged by native Mandarin speakers. Scores of the tests were analyzed statistically.

Analyses of the results show that the perception and production of Mandarin tones were affected by tonal context and task. Tone perception and production were easier in isolated syllables than in 2-syllable words and short sentences. The production of tone was better in imitating than reading from a list.

Significant correlations between the perception of tone in isolated syllables and in sequences (2-syllable words and short sentences) were found. However, the correlations between the production of tone in isolated syllables and in sequences were insignificant.

Significant correlations were found between the perception and the production (reading) of Mandarin tones in isolated syllables and 2-syllable words. However, the correlation between tone perception and production in short sentences familiar to the subjects was weak at the beginning and became insignificant at the end of a term.

Significant improvement in tone perception was found between the beginning of Mandarin learning and after a term of learning. However, no significant improvement in tone production was found.

Analyses of the tonal errors made by subjects show that the difficulty order of the four Mandarin tones as measured by error rates was different in different contexts at different times. The patterns of misperception and misproduction of Mandarin tones also differ depending on context.

Some suggestions of teaching Mandarin tones are proposed based on these findings.
