520 $a The data utilized for this study were obtained from 143 American educators who taught at universities in China between 1980 and 1989. T-TEST, and ONE-WAY ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE procedures of SPSSX/PC+ were used to analyze the data.
520 $a The most likely personal characteristics that would result in a satisfactory teaching experience in the People's Republic of China are: (1) Prior knowledge of courses to be taught; (2) A strong desire to travel and learn about China; (3) Earned a doctoral degree; and (4) Not majored in the Chinese language or Chinese area studies.
520 $a American educators would most likely have a satisfactory experience teaching at a Chinese university with the following institutional characteristics: (1) An official interpreter is provided for the American educator; (2) Chinese university administrators, faculty, and students are helpful; (3) American educators are permitted to select their own teaching materials; (4) Students are well prepared in the subject area and are sufficiently proficient in English to understand class objectives and assignments, and to communicate with the American educator; (5) American educators are housed off campus in foreign guest residences or hotels; (6) American educators have direct access to chief administrators of the Chinese university; and (7) The university is located in Beijing, Shanghai, or Tianjin.
