CBMNI, which stands for Computer-Based Music Notation Instruction, is a self-educational software program using HyperCard as a computer platform. Developed for this study, the CBMNI program featured (a) interactive hypermedia (inter-linked musical notation knowledge, musical tempo controlled by the user, the use of digital sounds and animations), (b) multiple representation mode (the staff notation, the number notation, the letter name of notes and the piano keyboard, four representations are linked and can be switched from one to another easily or presented at the same time in terms of a user's need), (c) graphical user interface (GUI) and direct manipulation, (d) context-sensitive-sound icon (the use of sound icon in the lesson navigation and sub-index design), and (e) self-directed but context- sensitive-guided learning environment (the application of artificial intelligence in the CAI and multi-path navigation characterized by author-designed but user-defined).Subjects--Topical Terms:

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using computers to teach music notation (the staff notation) to Chinese students. Based on the fact that many Chinese students have the number notation background and some of them don't, two versions of CBMNI program were designed and developed. Version One provided two music notation systems (staff notation and number notation) and Version Two provided only the staff notation system. Two different versions were compared for effectiveness. The computer program developed for this study is hoped to be used as a tool to help teach the staff notation in China. On the other hand, it could also be used as a helpful tool for the western musicologists and music educators to study Chinese music notation system. With the application of hyper-datafolder, this researcher also explored the cognitive development of human learning procedure and learning environment based upon the students' performance with the CBMNI.
