Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Ohio State University, 1991.

A determination of the underlying constructs for environmental education was made utilizing faculty responses from The Ohio State University (OSU), U.S.A., and the National Taiwan University (NTU), R.O.C. A systematic sampling of 120 faculty members respectively from OSU and NTU was conducted and a Q-sort technique used. Two forms (English/Chinese) of instrument were used. Efforts were made to ensure the instrument's validity and reliability. A significant (alpha =.05) difference was discovered on 11 of the 42 concepts in terms of perception of the relative importance between the OSU and NTU professors. Concepts addressing concerns about the energy issue, human impact on the environment, importance of environment to the well-being of human life, resource issues, and the importance of preserving biodiversity were rated higher by professors from OSU than NTU. Concepts addressing concerns about deforestation and related impact on the global environment, environmental responsibility of all sectors of society, and the impact brought about by the inappropriate use of technology were rated higher by professors from NTU. By using factor analysis with a VARIMAX rotation on data obtained from each university, two sets of constructs were identified. Five constructs identified by The OSU faculty can explain 38.5% of total variance as follows: "Environmental Ethics," "Population and Quality of Life," "Interdependence," "Environmental Management," and "Socio-Culture." Five constructs identified by the NTU faculty can explain 38.5% of total variance as follows: "Environmental Ethics," "Environmental Management," "Interdependence," "Population and Quality of Life," and "Resource Conservation." After using a stepwise multiple regression, significant (alpha =.05) predictors for the identified constructs were found. Predictors for OSU's constructs are: "wrote to a elected official about environmental issue," and "joined or continued membership in an environmental or consumer group" (Environmental Ethics); "gender" (Population and Quality of Life); "professional journals," and "mathematics" (Interdependence); and "books" (Socio-Culture). Predictors for NTU's construct are: "arts and humanities" (Environmental Ethics); "magazines," "engineering," and "friends/relatives" (Environmental Management); "social, political, or administrative sciences," and "Doctoral degree" (Interdependence); and "visited representative(s) of an institution, government body, civic group or corporation to make known your view point on an environmental issue" (Resource Conservation).Subjects--Topical Terms:
