Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brigham Young University, 1992.
This study rests on the assertion that there is a canonization and then significant shift in the content and form of significant (prize-winning and esthetic) Chinese films (PRC) of the 1980s. The nature of this content and form and its change are described in terms of a general system or canon of Chinese films. Content analysis of eight significant films is used to demonstrate this finding.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The reading of these eight Chinese film texts in this work shows the presence of five central elements which constitute the Chinese cinematic apparatus in the 1980s. In addition, this examination observes (1) the existence of a systematic canon of cinematic socialist realism in the early eighties; (2) a significant shift in the elements which compose the canon, which reveals political openness but does not completely destroy the canon or system.
