520 $a The dissertation examines how and why the Chinese perceived and reacted to a series of Soviet foreign behaviors, such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979), the Soviet threat to Poland during the Polish labor crisis (1980-81), and the Soviet shooting down of Korean airliner 007 (1983). China's articulated and implemented policies toward the Soviet Union in these contexts are systematically documented, compared and examined.
520 $a Beijing's conciliatory gestures toward Moscow during this period are best explained by some domestic factors, such as the role of changing ideology and elite politics. Specifically, the rehabilitation of China's domestic "revisionists" in the post-Mao years led to a reversal of the perception of Soviet domestic "revisionist" policies in the previous 20 years. At the same time, the unfolding economic reform gave rise to much interest in studying Soviet economic experience for both its shortcomings and strength. Politically, Soviet-type centralized political and economic control was also favored by the more conservative forces. All this created strong pressure for the Chinese to take initiatives to improve relations with Moscow.
