The literature of technology innovation and diffusion consistently indicate the importance of interinstitutional dependence and relationships in the development and commercialization of a new technology. But the institutional dimension has been ignored in the literature of international technology transfer. By applying the concept of "technology community", this research intends to link institutional theory with international technology transfer.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This inductive study of six U.S.-China technology transfer joint ventures led to propositions and hypotheses in exploring the research question. Managerial assessment of initial performance is a multidimensional concept. Technology suppliers' institutional networks are found to be associated with better initial performance. Specifically, technology suppliers' scope of linkage, intensity of linkage (amount of resources exchanged and frequency of contact) and timing of linkage with other institutions in the technology community are positively associated with initial performance. Finally, technology supplier firms' conscious and purposive development and use of networks within its technology community contribute to better performance of technology transfer.
