The decision to combine intercultural communication concerns with those of cross-cultural documentary films resulted from the lack of previous research, and the increasing importance of cultural misunderstanding in the portrayal of different cultural experiences including that of the Chinese culture. "Small Happiness" from Carma Hinton's Long Bow series and "Marrying" from Peter Montagnon's the Heart of the Dragon were used for the analysis.

The study first examined China's political context within which the documentaries were made. Then, it examined production aspects of the two series. Based on an understanding of the intercultural communication factors in the production process, a textual analysis of each episode was conducted to illustrate how these factors influence the shape of the two episodes.

The study leads to the following conclusions: (1) A producer's unbiased attitude toward, and understanding of, a host culture is essential to an insightful portrayal of the culture. (2) A close producer/subject relationship is crucial to documentary films of direct address style and leads to a more spontaneous form and in-depth portrayal of issues. (3) A producer's credibility with the host culture is key to effective interaction which increases mutual understanding and friendly relations. (4) In spite of different purposes intended by various styles of cross-cultural documentaries, intercultural communication factors play a key role in the portrayal of a host culture.
