Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 1992.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between attitudes/motivation variables and Chinese students' learning English as a foreign language. Fifty-one graduate Chinese students from Taiwan were the subjects in this study. Five subscales were chosen from Lambert-Gardner's Attitudes/Motivation Battery Test: Attitudes toward Learning a Foreign Language, Attitudes toward the English-speaking People, Orientation, Desire to Learn English, and Motivational Intensity Scale. Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale was also used to eliminate the unreliable questionnaires. The students' TOEFL scores were used as the assessment of their English ability.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Analysis showed that the students' attitudes toward learning a foreign language, the instrumental orientation, their desire to learn English and their motivational intensity had positive correlation to their TOEFL scores. Further, the students' motivation was the most reliable variable to their English performance and which was sustained by their attitudes, especially the attitudes toward learning a foreign language.
