Cardiovascular and body composition changes were determined following Taiji Quan exercise combined with Chinese Meditation (TME). Ten healthy volunteers, 18-46 yrs, completed a seven-week TME program which consisted of a 30-min Chinese meditation each day, and one-hr modified Taiji Quan exercise per day, 4-d a wk, for 7 wks. A second group of 10 volunteers, aged 17-41, completed a Badminton program (BA) of the same frequency and duration.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In the TME group, mean resting heart rate (RHR), mean resting systolic blood pressure (RSBP), and mean resting diastolic blood pressure (RDBP) were significantly decreased compared to the BA group after 7 wks. The BA group mean RHR and RSBP did not change significantly. Mean percent body fat (PBF) decreased and average lean body weight increased in the TME group compared to the BA group. No total body weight change in either group was observed. Our data provide evidence that the 7-wk TME program was beneficial to the cardiovascular system as well as body composition.
